Servers & OS

What is Ubuntu and Linux

What it is

One of the most widespread Linux-based operating systems — free, stable, with a long support cycle for server releases (LTS).

How we use it

The standard OS for our servers — Docker containers, bots and VPN nodes run on it.

Where it helps a business

  • You need a server for a website, bot, mail or VPN: a free, stable OS with long-term support.
  • Everything should run in containers, the same way at any provider.

How we use it

Linux is the standard OS of our servers: Docker containers, bots and VPN nodes run on it. The corporate gateway is deployed on the company's own Linux servers, and the websites server is Linux too, with Docker, nginx, logrotate and cron. The server and its containers run in the Europe/Moscow time zone.

Common problems

  • Unattended updates. A server nobody has updated for a year accumulates vulnerabilities.
  • Logs fill the disk. Rotation is needed: on the websites server the entry nginx logs are rotated and Docker logs are size-capped.
  • The server's time zone. Hosting time and the time in the admin panel must match, or logs and schedules disagree.

When you do not need it

If a company's whole infrastructure is on Windows (accounting software, user accounts, shared folders), it makes more sense to maintain Windows Server and use Linux only for separate services.
