Automation & VPN

What is OpenVPN

What it is

An older but time-tested VPN protocol.

How we apply it

We use it when a client needs compatibility with legacy corporate equipment or internal policies.

Where it helps a business

  • The company already has equipment or a policy built around OpenVPN.
  • Contractors or branch offices can connect only with this protocol.

How we use it

We use OpenVPN when the client needs compatibility with older corporate equipment or internal policies. For new private networks our default is WireGuard, and where VPNs are blocked, Xray disguised as HTTPS, as in the corporate gateway and on the VPN route. Setup is under Infrastructure.

Common problems

  • Blocking. OpenVPN traffic has a recognisable pattern, and where VPNs are cut it works poorly.
  • Heavier and slower than modern protocols on the same server.

When you do not need it

Without old equipment or policies that require OpenVPN specifically, WireGuard is the better choice for a new network.
